Golden Crossover Strategy: 50/200 SMA Performance on NSE
The short answer

Testing 50/200 SMA golden crosses on daily candles from 2017-07-03 to 2026-10-07 delivered a net return of 32.5% after charges across 79 trades. In contrast, over the last 12 months alone, the strategy returned -4.8% due to short-term market consolidation.

What are the golden crossover and death cross?
A golden crossover strategy is one of the most widely followed technical setups in global stock markets. It occurs when a short-term moving average crosses above a long-term moving average on daily price charts. In its classic definition, traders use the 50-day simple moving average (SMA) as the fast line and the 200-day SMA as the slow baseline.
When the 50-day SMA crosses above the 200-day SMA, it signals that medium-term buying pressure is accelerating faster than long-term trend friction, marking the transition into a bullish regime. Conversely, when the 50-day SMA crosses below the 200-day SMA, the pattern is known as a death cross, indicating the onset of a potential prolonged bear market.
Because these moving averages require 50 and 200 daily sessions to compute, they change direction slowly and filter out day-to-day market noise.
Entry Long: 50-day SMA crosses above 200-day SMA.
Exit Long: 50-day SMA crosses below 200-day SMA (Death Cross) or target/stop exit.
Candle Timeframe: 1 Day (Daily).
Multi-year performance since 2017 vs the last 12 months
We backtested the golden crossover strategy on a basket of 15 leading NIFTY constituents including Reliance Industries, HDFC Bank, Infosys, and Larsen & Toubro. Positions were tested under delivery product rules with full statutory levies—including buy/sell STT, stamp duty, SEBI turnover fees, exchange transaction charges, GST, and slippage.
Across the multi-year period from July 2017 to October 2026, the strategy took 79 trades, won 40.5% of them, and generated a net profit of 32.5% after all charges.
However, over the isolated 12-month window from October 2025 to October 2026, the strategy lost money, recording a return of -4.8%. This divergence highlights the inherent nature of trend following: long holding periods are required to capture multi-month macroeconomic trends.

Event studies: short-term behavior after crossover signals
Do golden crossovers and death crosses provide immediate short-term directional momentum over 1 to 10 trading sessions? We ran an event study across all NIFTY 100 constituent stocks from July 2017 to October 2026, measuring close-to-close returns 1, 5, and 10 days after a crossover signal.
| Signal | Times seen | Up after 1 day | Up after 5 days | Up after 10 days | Average move in 5 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 50/200 SMA Golden Crossover | 553 | 53.0% | 51.0% | 50.8% | +0.20% |
| 50/200 SMA Death Cross | 550 | 45.3% | 47.1% | 45.8% | -0.39% |
| Every day, same stocks | 193,939 | 50.8% | 52.7% | 53.7% | +0.41% |
Interestingly, the event study reveals that after a golden cross, stocks were up 5 days later only 51.0% of the time, which is actually lower than the random baseline of 52.7% across all trading sessions. Similarly, after a death cross, stocks were positive 5 days later 47.1% of the time.
This demonstrates that moving average crossovers are lagging signals that do not offer short-term statistical predictability over a few days. Their real profitability stems from staying invested during prolonged multi-month trends, not from short-term momentum spikes.
Scanning for active golden crossover stocks on NSE
Because golden crossovers occur infrequently on any single stock, discretionary traders and quantitative investors rely on automated scanners to track setups across the broader market. You can scan all NSE-listed equities for active 50/200 SMA breakouts using our real-time golden crossover stocks scanner.
When screening for candidates, look for stocks accompanied by rising delivery volumes and clean sector momentum, rather than stocks that have already run up sharply before the crossover.
Managing risk, drawdowns, and turnover
One significant benefit of the golden crossover strategy is its low turnover. By taking only 79 trades over more than 9 years, cumulative statutory charges amounted to just ₹5,223 on a ₹1,00,000 account.
Unlike high-frequency intraday setups that suffer from heavy churn and STT erosion, delivery trend-following preserves capital against brokerage friction. The key challenge is emotional: traders must endure lengthy holding periods and tolerate temporary drawdowns during choppy sideways consolidation periods like the recent 12 months.

Frequently asked questions
Did the golden crossover strategy make money in the historical backtest?
Yes. From 2017 to 2026 on 15 liquid NSE stocks, the 50/200 SMA golden cross produced 32.5% net of all statutory charges across 79 trades.
Why was the golden crossover unprofitable over the last 12 months?
Over the last 12 months, the strategy returned -4.8% after charges. Sideways consolidation prevented stocks from developing the multi-month trending moves necessary to overcome false breakout stops.
What is the difference between a golden cross and a death cross?
A golden cross occurs when the 50-day SMA crosses above the 200-day SMA, signaling a bullish trend. A death cross occurs when the 50-day SMA crosses below the 200-day SMA, indicating a bearish trend.
Does a golden cross predict stock prices 5 days later?
No. In our NIFTY 100 event study since 2017, stocks were positive 5 days after a golden cross only 51.0% of the time, slightly below the baseline rate of 52.7%.
Where can I scan for active golden crossover stocks?
