How Net Profit Is Calculated

The price difference is only the gross profit. Every trade in India also pays brokerage and statutory charges, and on small moves those charges take a large share of the profit.

Net Profit = (Sell Price − Buy Price) × Quantity − Charges
ROI % = Net Profit / (Buy Price × Quantity) × 100

Example (intraday): buy 500 shares at ₹400 and sell at ₹425. The gross profit is ₹12,500. Charges come to ₹121.75: brokerage ₹40.00, STT ₹53.13, NSE transaction charge ₹12.66, SEBI fee ₹0.41, GST ₹9.55 and stamp duty ₹6.00. The net profit is ₹12,378.25, a 6.19% return on the ₹2,00,000 spent.

The same trade as delivery costs ₹473.27 in charges, mostly the 0.1% STT on both sides, leaving ₹12,026.73.

Why Charges Matter for Active Traders

One trade's charges look small, but a strategy that trades several times a day pays them hundreds of times a year. Our 9 / 15 EMA backtest shows how charges can turn a small gross profit into a loss. Test your own rules after charges in the Backtest Lab.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which charges does the share profit calculator deduct?

Brokerage, STT, the NSE transaction charge, the SEBI fee, 18% GST on brokerage and those fees, stamp duty on the buy, and for delivery the DP charge on the sell. Brokerage uses Zerodha's published rates; other brokers charge differently.

Why does a delivery trade cost more than an intraday trade?

STT on delivery is 0.1% on both the buy and the sell, while intraday STT is 0.025% on the sell only. Stamp duty is also higher on delivery, and selling from your demat account adds a DP charge.

What does the ROI figure mean?

It is the net profit, after all charges, as a percentage of the money spent on the buy (buy price times quantity).

Is this profit before or after income tax?

Before income tax. Intraday and delivery profits are taxed differently in India, so check your own case with a tax adviser.
