STT Is Only One of the Charges
Brokerage, exchange charges, stamp duty and GST are added on top of STT. The brokerage calculator shows all of them for one trade, and the share profit calculator shows what you keep after them.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is STT in the share market?
Securities Transaction Tax is a tax the central government charges on every buy or sell done on a recognised stock exchange. Your broker collects it and shows it on the contract note.
Is STT charged on both buy and sell?
On equity delivery, yes: 0.1% on the buy side and 0.1% on the sell side. On intraday equity, futures and options it is charged only on the sell side.
Do I pay STT if the trade makes a loss?
Yes. STT is calculated on the value of the trade, not on the profit, so it is paid on losing trades too.
Did STT change in 2026?
Budget 2026 raised STT on futures from 0.02% to 0.05% and on options from 0.1% to 0.15% of the premium sold, from 1 April 2026. The rates on equity delivery (0.1%) and intraday (0.025%) did not change.
How much STT does an intraday trade cost?
Selling ₹1,00,000 worth of shares intraday costs ₹25 in STT (0.025% of the sell value). The same trade held as delivery costs 0.1% on both the buy and the sell, about ₹200 in total.
