The short answer

Does a volume shockers strategy work? We found 4,492 days since 2017-07-03 when a NIFTY 100 stock traded on more than 3 times its 20-day average volume (the same rule as our Volume shockers scan). After a green shocker the average close-to-close move was +0.27% the next day, +0.62% after 5 days and +1.17% after 10 days; after a red one +0.07%, +0.61% and +0.87%. For comparison, the same stocks on an average day moved +0.08%, +0.40% and +0.81% over the same horizons.

What is a volume shocker?

A volume shocker is a stock trading on far more volume than usual. LeadFinn's Volume shockers scan uses this rule: today's volume divided by its 20-day average (today included) is above 3, on daily candles. We used exactly that rule. The reasons behind a spike differ: results, news, block deals, index changes. A spike says something happened, not which way the stock goes next.

The test universe is the 100 stocks in NIFTY 100 as listed today, from 2017-07-03 to 2026-10-07. Because the list is today's, stocks that left the index earlier are not in it, which tends to flatter old results.

What happens the next day, 5 days and 10 days after a volume shocker?

We took every shocker day, noted the close, and measured the move to the close 1, 5 and 10 trading days later. 'Any day' is the same measure for every day of the same stocks, so you can see what a shocker adds. 1 shocker day was left out because a daily move above 40% inside the window suggested a split or data jump.

Frequently asked questions

What are volume shockers?

Stocks trading on far more volume than usual. In LeadFinn's Volume shockers scan it means today's volume is more than 3 times its 20-day average, on daily candles.

Do volume shockers keep going up the next day?

Not reliably. After a green shocker the average next-day move was +0.27% and 51% of stocks were up, against +0.11% and 50% after any green day.

Is a volume shocker bullish or bearish?

On its own it is neither. After a green shocker the 5-day average was +0.62%, after a red one +0.61%; both are small next to the charges on a trade.

Volume shockers for swing trading: what holding period worked best?

Of 1, 5 and 10 trading days, the 10-day hold did best after charges since 2017 (+2.8%), against -66.5% for 5 days and -91.1% for 1 day. Even the best was close to zero.

Where can I find today's volume shockers for free?

On LeadFinn's Volume shockers scan (/scans/volume-shockers). It is free and updated after each trading day.

Why do volume shockers happen?

Common reasons are quarterly results, company news, block or bulk deals, index inclusion or exclusion, and large buying or selling by institutions. The volume spike shows interest, not direction.
