How the exchanges work it out

Binance (its liquidation FAQ): liquidation price = (margin + maintenance amount − side × quantity × entry) ÷ (quantity × maintenance margin rate − side × quantity), with side +1 for a long and −1 for a short. The rate and the amount come from the margin tier the position value falls in at the liquidation price; when that is a different tier, Binance says to recalculate with it, and the calculator does.

Bybit (its liquidation rules): long = [entry × qty − entry × qty ÷ leverage − added margin ÷ (1 − taker fee) − maintenance deduction] ÷ [qty − qty × maintenance rate]; short uses + in place of −. The tier is the one your position value falls in. Bybit's own example, 1 BTC long at 40,000 with 50x, 3,000 USDT added, 0.5% maintenance and 0.055% taker fee, comes out at 36,380.25 here too.

Other exchanges (CoinDCX, Mudrex, ZebPay, Shark) do not publish a formula or tiers that can be read by a program, so the page asks for the maintenance margin rate shown in your exchange's contract details and uses the plain isolated-margin rule: entry × (1 − margin share + maintenance rate) for a long.

Margin tiers were read from each exchange's API (18 Oct 2026 06:26 UTC). Exchanges liquidate on the mark price, not the last traded price, and closing fees can move the actual figure slightly. Always check the liquidation price on the exchange's order screen.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a liquidation price?

The mark price at which the exchange closes your futures position because the margin left in it has fallen to the maintenance margin. On isolated margin you lose the margin in that position, not the rest of your wallet.

Why is my liquidation price closer than 1 ÷ leverage?

Because the exchange closes the position before the margin is fully gone: it keeps the maintenance margin back. At 10x the margin is 10% of the position, but a 0.5% maintenance margin means liquidation comes after a move of about 9.5%, not 10%.

Does a bigger position change the liquidation price?

Yes. Binance and Bybit ask for a higher maintenance margin rate on bigger positions (margin tiers), and allow less leverage. The calculator picks the tier from your position value.

How do I move my liquidation price further away?

Use less leverage, or add margin to the position. Added margin is in the calculator; on Bybit the formula divides it by (1 − taker fee), as Bybit's own rules do.
